The earlier version of the tool offered SharePoint 2007 solutions as a part of the MS-Office suite. At that time, the tool was very much regarded with its benefits and features as a web content management tool. However, this version was not very stable and demanded certain updates in different areas. As a result, the next major update took place in 2010 and then this tool was taken out from the MS-Office suite and sold separately.
SharePoint 2010 solutions have been the most stable and widely used among business enterprises. It introduced many new features which were not a part of the earlier version like better social integration platform, enhanced UI, improved search capabilities, etc. However, almost two years have passed since this update and the business owners are now feeling the urge to get a new major update done from Microsoft.

The new content management platform will provide enhanced support for social networking, a major improvement in UI for clients and mobile. In addition to that they are also planning to setup an application market with enhanced cloud support services. All of this in turn will largely benefit in the process of SharePoint application development.
